Built for the bigger jobs
Pliers with real leverage
The Surge's long handles and full-size jaws let you grip, twist and cut harder than a pocket-size tool allows. Turn stubborn nuts, pull fencing staples, or cut heavy wire without straining your hand.
The wire cutters are replaceable. When they wear down, you swap the cutters instead of the tool.
Four tools outside, all locking
The plain blade, serrated blade, scissors and blade exchanger all open from the outside with one hand. You don't have to unfold the pliers for everyday cutting.
Every tool locks open, so nothing folds back while you push on it. Press the lock to close it.
A blade exchanger that takes jigsaw blades
The Blade Exchanger® swaps between the included saw and file in seconds. It also accepts standard T-shank jigsaw blades from any hardware shop, so you can fit a metal-cutting or fine-wood blade for the job in hand.

Choose your finish

Black
A black oxide finish for a low-key, workshop look. It wears to bare steel at the edges with use, which many owners like as a sign of a hard-working tool.
Stainless steel (silver)
The classic brushed-steel Surge. Hides scratches well and keeps its look after years of heavy use.

The warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship. Normal wear (including wear on the black finish), misuse, and lost or stolen tools are not covered. Keep your LightMen invoice, as it's your proof of purchase.
Keep it working like new
Clean
Rinse in warm, soapy water, then dry it fully with the tools open. A new tool may have a little black residue from the finish; wipe and oil it before first use.
Oil
Put a drop of light oil on each pivot, including the scissor spring, and work the tools open and shut a few times.
Sharpen
420HC sharpens easily on any stone or pull-through sharpener, so a few strokes bring the edge back.
Use the right tool
Use the pliers to grip and the screwdrivers to pry, never the blades. That keeps the tips intact for years.
Questions customers ask us
Does it come with a sheath?
No. Leatherman no longer includes a sheath with the Surge. Our nylon sheath (with or without pockets), Heritage leather sheath and Ainsworth leather sheath all fit it in size Large.
Is it too big to carry every day?
At 354 g and 11.4 cm it's a full-size tool, best carried in a belt sheath. If you want something for your pocket, the Wave+ is about 110 g lighter with most of the same tools.
What can I fit in the blade exchanger?
The included saw and file, plus any standard T-shank jigsaw blade, which you can buy at hardware shops for wood, metal or plastic. Blades longer than the tool may not fold away.
Should I choose the Surge or the Wave+?
Choose the Surge for heavier work: bigger pliers, longer blades, stranded-wire cutters and the jigsaw blade exchanger. Choose the Wave+ for a lighter tool that's easier to carry every day.
Will Leatherman bits fit?
Yes. The large bit driver takes Leatherman bits, and one double-ended bit comes in the box. The Bit Kit adds 21 more, and the Bit Extender reaches recessed screws. The Surge has no small bit driver; it uses a small screwdriver instead.
Does the black finish scratch?
Yes. Black oxide wears to bare steel at the edges with use. It doesn't affect performance, but if you want a tool that looks new for longer, choose stainless steel.
Can I take it on a flight?
Not in your cabin bag, because it has blades. Pack it in checked luggage.
Can I get it engraved?
Yes, laser engraving is free on Leatherman tools. Add a name, date, message or company logo. See examples of our engraving.
How quickly will it reach me?
